![]() New from S.D. Murphy WoodworkingI've combined my Stickley-inspired floor lamp base with a 12-sided, 18-inch shade from Sue Johnson Custom Lamps. The lamp is 56 inches high and uses two bulbs of up to 75 watts each. |
|
Sue Johnson's artisans inlay the shade with hand-cut dragonfly silhouettes and real peppercorn leaves and buds . I build the shade hardware myself, bending, hammering and grinding the brackets. As with all of my floor lamps, I grind the pyramid-headed capscrews by which the brackets are attached to the post as well as the matching pins on the base. The post is made of quartersawn white oak, employing a “quadrilinear” technique similar to that pioneered by the L. and J.G. Stickley Shops in the early twentieth century. This technique produces, without the use of veneers, a post with quartersawn figure on all four sides. The Dragonfly Floor Lamp. $2200 delivered. Contact me for lead time. |
The photo above shows what might be called the standard version of the Compass Lamp, that is, one in dark oak and fitted with a ribbed, amber shade that approximates the size and shape of the original shade. (Stickley gave the lamp a lovely silk and wicker shade that we would consider too much of a fire hazard today.)
On the left below is the lamp in cherry while on the right is one in mahogany. In between is another oak version, this one with a fluted, Deco-inspired shade.

This version of the Compass Lamp was inspired by the squat proportions of several “Liberty Bell Lamps” made in the early twentieth century. I shortened the lamp so that it stands approximately 13 inches high and fitted it with square hardware and a square shade in either amber or frosted glass. The Liberty Lamp with a frosted shade is $470. Lamp with an amber shade is $500. Contact me for availability and ordering information. |

Shown here with a hand-crafted, inlaid shade from Sue Johnson Custom Lamps in Berkeley, California. $1425 with inlaid mica shade, $1300 with plain mica.
